Seriously though, I'...The cakes should win it. Seriously though, I'm sure you are you building up an online portfolio, getting to know publishers, authors - clients who need illustration - online. Illustration is great for not being location based, you are lucky you don't have heavy machinery, high material costs, mess print to deal with and that you don't need to be in an office. You could work in a tree!

If you want a job in a studio then unless you live somewhere absolutely remote (in which case you need to be prepared move) your nearest city - Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds or Newcastle hold plenty of opportunities - Character Creative, the creative agency spoken of in this article is based in Leeds covers jobs in North West.

The age issue. Pha! Mid twenties, in other parts of Europe all students leave art school at that age. You are still young and the fact that you are more life experienced is a good thing - You've added cake making to the tea making, what other skills have you got that a fresher might not? Plenty I'm sure.

if your financial situation forces you to be more selective about what you choose to do about internships then all the better. You need money at every stage of life, start your post grad career as you mean to go on, just be creative about it. There are many routes.

Good luck.

RRobert Urquharthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09617582288901409672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7357283740622498057.post-66156482451487716852012-01-28T20:29:14.312+00:002012-01-28T20:29:14.312+00:00The tea making is metaphorical! Looking, listening...The tea making is metaphorical! Looking, listening and making yourself useful, then indispensable would seem to be the way to go. Making an actual cup of tea for someone is a fine way to find out a little more about them, appearing with a cuppa at the right moment (when person is overrun with work you cannot help with or is just coming out of a meeting you think might have been hard etc) shows a good perceptive and kind approach. It will get you noticed, be there at the right time with the right attitude, ideas and a favourite mug.

I too am an older graduate....much older. Back to college aged 40 to finally study for the graphic design degree I wanted, got great marks. Trying to find work to fit with family commitments proved tricky so I did some freelance then back for an MA in Printmaking. Developing my own specialism, about to set up small scale letterpress printing as well as maybe building on the graphic design freelance, its another string to my bow. To make your way you need to try and develop a 'difference' from all those other graduates. By concentrating on the things I really enjoy and want to excel in I am trying to make my own luck, build my own online presence and hopefully - slowly, slowly catchy monkey.

We can all make excuses why we didn't get the killer job, why we missed out on an interview, why our efforts were not appreciated, but we can all make the most of the opportunities life presents and remember that all the people we deal with are trying to do the same. It never really helps to blame other people. Put the kettle on, take stock, concentrate on the things you want to do and are good at and build a new improved action plan.Elizabeth Fraserhttp://be.net/ElizabethFrasernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7357283740622498057.post-57627099787090084292012-01-27T11:37:24.832+00:002012-01-27T11:37:24.832+00:00Update: @anothergraduate has had their account sus...Update: @anothergraduate has had their account suspected for tweeting spam. They were trying to promote themselves and got into a jam. Hopefully they will be back online soon with a clearer idea of how to go about things.Robert Urquharthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09617582288901409672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7357283740622498057.post-68641723412575803382012-01-27T10:59:41.337+00:002012-01-27T10:59:41.337+00:00I'm actually commenting from the unusual posit...I'm actually commenting from the unusual position of returning to digital illustration after a few years of listless wandering and finding myself in a similar position to Another Graduate, i.e. can't seem to find any relevant work placements or jobs. (Illustration is pretty specific but I have usable skills elsewhere too) In fact, my position is almost worse in some cases because the internship he or she is complaining about I can't even apply to because I'm no longer a 'graduate'. I'm older, (supposedly) wiser, have far more financial commitments, but you know what?

I would give anything to land an internship or placement, no matter how temporary, so I can get that vital experience that can only make my work better. I would even make tea.

I'm making the assumption that Another Graduate lives in or near London too, where there are perhaps countless more opportunities than where I live in the North. I'm not trying to be the 'bitter old lady' (I'm mid-twenties, shock horror!) but I will say that Another Graduate's attitude is appalling. Whats wrong with rolling up your sleeves and getting dirty?

As an aside, I make a great cup of tea. And I bake cakes too.@tiger_teahttp://www.tiger-tea.co.uknoreply@blogger.com
